Ministry Statistics

Next month, the government is most likely going to send you a check. The question is - what will you do with it?

The Basic Idea

Take the economic stimulus check you'll get from the government in May (or a similar amount if you don't qualify for a check) and pledge to give all or part of it to Rainbow Network as we work to alleviate extreme poverty in Nicaragua.

Decide What to Give

Ideally, we would like everyone to give their entire stimulus check, but we realize that many people need this money to put food on their table or pay the mortgage. So, we suggest that each of us choose one of three levels of commitment:

Give it All - The math on this one is pretty simple and the impact is incredibly dramatic!

Tithe It - Give 10%

Give .7% - We explain this below.

"Where Did You Get .7%?"

0.7% is the percentage of the rich nations' Gross National Income that development economists and world leaders agree it will take to accomplish the Millenium Development Goals by the target date of 2015.

The figure emerged in 1969 from a Commission on International Development led by Canada's former prime minister, Lester Pearson. The U.S. did not agree to that figure then (though it was approved by the UN General Assembly, of which we are a member), but did sign on to it in 2002 as part of the Monterrey Consensus. Since then, the U.S. government has distanced itself from that figure.
