Hurricane Eta hits rural Nicaragua.

by Megan Herrera   |   November 4, 2020   |   Springfield, MO

As you may have seen, the northeastern corner of Nicaragua endured a direct impact from a category four hurricane on Monday evening. There was mass devastation in the area of Bilwi, where the hurricane took landfall causing many families to lose their homes, electricity, and crops.

As this storm approached the country of Nicaragua, we were happy to join in on prevention and emergency response preparedness in cooperation with the Nicaraguan government in La Dalia, where our northernmost network is located. Our team and our vehicles were on call to help relocate people and to deliver supplies as needed.

Thankfully the communities we serve are several hours from the impact of Hurricane Eta, but we are seeing the aftereffects through rain and flooding. Our team in La Dalia has been called on to help families affected by flooding, most of which are outside our partner communities.

Throughout our other regions of work, we are seeing a few landslides, which are being dealt with quickly by the Nicaraguan government, and we are seeing overflowing of nearly every river around our communities. At this time, we are told that the coffee farms are bearing the storm successfully but the corn, bean, rice, and vegetable fields in the north are not.

Our mission is to help the poorest people of Nicaragua and that is exactly what we plan on doing. Whether or not someone is in a partner community or not, we will be helping anyone and everyone that we can through this time.

Please pray for these rains to subside, providing opportunities for some crops to make it through the storm. Pray for our team to stay safe as they work tirelessly to help as many families as possible.

Please give if you can so that we can provide food, clothing, medicines, and safety to families suffering at this time.

If you have not seen it, please check out this video. It is one thing to sit through a storm in a safe, secure house. It’s another thing to endure a storm like Eta with a typical rural Nicaraguan home. Mauricio gives us an inside look at a typical home that is being affected by this storm.

Please join us in fighting this fight.

Blessings,

Megan Herrera, Executive Director
