From Hopelessness to Healing: Lea’s Story

Lea grew up in a rural Nicaraguan community with her mother and sister. Her father left when she was a little girl, and their already difficult situation became even harder. Her mother sold firewood to provide for her girls, but it was a daily struggle just to get by.

Determined to change her family’s future, Lea applied for a Rainbow Network scholarship – and became one of the first recipients in her community!

She received school supplies, uniforms, transportation assistance, and personal development training. She especially loved teaching younger children in her colectivo (small tutoring groups), and she began dreaming about a future career.

But when Lea was 16, everything came to a halt.

She found a lump in her breast. A hospital visit confirmed the devastating news: Lea had breast cancer.

When she heard this, she lost all hope. She and her family were overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. They began to pray, asking God to move in powerful ways on Lea’s behalf.

Doctors recommended chemotherapy, radiation and a surgery that would cost $1,000 USD. This was far beyond what her family could afford.

Lea entered our Medical Needs program, and our team came alongside her family to listen, pray and provide financial support.

We committed to covering the cost of the surgery, and her family was able to cover transportation expenses.

The day of the surgery came, and everything went smoothly. After surgery and months of recovery, follow-up scans revealed something incredible: Lea was cancer free!

She said,

“I thank you with all my heart for making my surgery possible. God, through Rainbow Network, showed me His immense love.”

Each year since, she’s gone to follow-up exams – and each time, the scans have come back clear.

Today, Lea is 35 years old, and she teaches preschool in her community. She often reflects on that difficult season – and remembers how God brought her healing, hope and a community that loved her through her hardest days.
