We talk about the ripple effect a lot, and for good reason. It is one of the most beautiful parts of what we do. Time and time again, we get to witness how one small step of compassion grows into something much bigger.

A special story comes from our friends, Joel and Allison.

For years, Joel and Allison had been hearing about Rainbow Network through friends and different activities – each of these moments feeling like a little nudge.

But then Allison heard about it from an unexpected place – the classroom where she taught.

One of her students gave a passionate, heartfelt speech about the importance of education and the powerful impact Rainbow Network is making in Nicaragua.

That was it.

The final nudge.

If a student felt that strongly, Joel and Allison knew it was time to act. They signed up to sponsor a student 22 years ago, and they have never looked back.

Since then, their journey has been filled with connection and joy.

• They’ve exchanged many letters with their students
• They’ve given and received encouragement through life’s ups and downs
• Allison even gets to practice her Spanish (which their students love!)

What started as one “yes” has grown into years of meaningful impact.

Through their sponsorship, Joel and Allison have helped multiple students finish high school, grow in confidence and dream bigger about their future.

Even today, that original classroom moment continues to inspire them. Allison may not remember the name of the student who gave that speech, but she will never forget the impact of their words.

Now, each semester, she shares her own story with her students, encouraging them to use their voices, speak up for what matters and believe that they can make a difference.
