John first traveled to Nicaragua on his own, and he was taken aback by people’s need for water.

A year later, he and his wife Sue joined their church on a trip and learned how Rainbow Network was working to meet basic needs of all sorts, including water.

He was amazed by the people’s desire to create a better future for their families, and he was inspired by the real, lasting change happening through our work.

From there, John and Sue signed up to sponsor a student, helped fund houses, and John decided to add Rainbow Network to his list of legacy gifts. 

I will never forget a day about 10 years ago when I ran into John outside the Springfield airport. After greeting me with his great big smile and a warm hug, he listened as I shared updates on Rainbow Network and the people he met on his trips. Then, he gave me some big news.

He believed so much in me and where our organization was heading that he decided to leave $1,000,000 to Rainbow Network as a legacy gift.

After he made this comment, he nonchalantly walked in the airport, leaving me gathering myself from the shock and awe of this incredible news before walking in for my own flight. 

While John’s life on earth ended way too soon, his memory ripples throughout Rainbow Network each year when our annual distribution is received and put to use. Being a businessman himself, John knew the importance of our General Fund and wanted us to be able to meet whatever need we faced.

Working with people and working in the conditions we do, cookie cutter approaches do not work. John knew that, and he wanted his gift to ensure the security of our continued mission. Adding to the blessing, the distributions come in July, carrying us through the summer months when donations tend to be slower.

John’s gift has made a huge impact on my life and the lives of many others. We honor him and his generosity today and always. 

During this season of reflecting on the birth and life of our Savior, I encourage you to reflect on your own life and ask Him how you can make an impact on this world. Whether it’s leaving a legacy gift like John, sponsoring a student or praying for communities in need, every action is helping people build a better future.
