The Hope of A Home

The Hope of A Home

When a community learns that we will be building a housing project nearby, there is an overwhelming amount of excitement.

Can you imagine dreaming and praying for a dignified home to raise your children, and then finding out that the opportunity might become a reality? Your mind would easily wander as you dreamt about how you would use your new home, what plants you would grow in your yard, the potable water and latrine that would be right at your home, and the new and easier routes to school for your children.

It also wouldn’t take long for you to become anxious. What if your family is not chosen for the project? How will you ever be able to make your monthly contributions towards the cost of materials? Will you still get to see your family if you move a kilometer or more away? What will your new neighbors be like, and will you get along?

These feelings are all-consuming and take up a lot of mental space. This was apparent on a recent trip.

Our group was visiting their sister community – a community that is soon to be the location of a new housing project. As usual, we visited several families. We got to know them, heard their stories, and shared our hopes for one another. No matter who we asked, they all had the same prayer request – that God will make the housing project a reality. Soon!

Typically during these visits, we receive prayer requests for an ill family member, a lost job, or an upcoming graduation. Not this time. Every single family was anxiously awaiting the housing project.

What I love most about this situation is that you not only see the great need and desire for housing, but you see people’s faith come alive. You see them place their full hope and trust in God as He is the giver of all things.

As we lean into prayer with our friends in Nicaragua, I encourage you to join us. Please pray for the opportunities ahead of us, specifically:

  • for funding to become available to meet the many needs for housing.
  • that the families with the greatest needs will have access to this opportunity.
  • that land will become available for more houses to be built.
  • that God will bless the families participating in the housing program.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” -Philippians 4:6
